The Immortal Edwin

Wed Aug 26, 2009, 6:22 PM
In the 200 years of walking the earth as an immortal I have never seen anything so beautiful and yet so unsettled. I had been walking the empty streets of New York coming back from my coven to my home. A lark’s voice came from up above tender yet bitter it sang of lost hope and new love, curious I drove my claws into the wall of the building in the ally way to take a peek at what it was. When I made it to the window I moved my body more at an angle in which it was hidden from view of the window that I now hovered over peering into it.
Never had I lay my black eyes upon such an appetising specimen of prey, though this time I looked with not my appetite but at what was actually in front of me with curiosity and want. A woman stood in her sitting room with a sheet of music in her hand singing to the heavens. Her features were angled and defined gently making her look like an angel, with eyes the color of twilight and hair that was an array of tight blond curls that fell all the way down to her lower back. She wore a white night gown that was made of the finest silk that fit to her petite figure. This was the absolutely most beautiful being in existence that I had seen.
When she finished, she put the piece of paper down onto a table near her and walked over to the window with a more troubled look on her face. I immediately lifted my head away from view for the obvious reason that if a person were to come to their window and see another person above them clinging to the wall with very long sharp claws in the middle of the night it would give his coven away. I turned my body around and crawled up the wall a little higher and then continued to observe this fine creature. Though something troubled me about her, she was beautiful in all ways but why was she so disgruntled. She began to speak.
“Every day and every night I do the same things repeatedly. It all feels so meaningless, but why when I sing is that when I only feel complete...” a sobbing sound began to arise as she paused in her speech, “Why do I feel as empty as I do now? Isn’t there something more to life as a whole? He’s out there somewhere. ”
I was tempted to reply but instead I took note it was time to leave, and began to crawl to the roof of the building, accidentally knocking over a very expensive vase that sat in the next window ledge. Trying to catch it before it hit the ground I missed it, letting a loud shattering echo, echo of the buildings causing the woman to look up and catch hold of my eyes. As I watched her mouth drop, I quickly turned and mumbled something and vanished from her sight. I more landed around the corner and began walking towards the main street where there was people which meant food, teleporting always made me hungry.
Over the next few days I would go by her window each night staying on the ground to hear her singing voice, but as I did my desire to make her mine grew. In my life I had only ever offered the chance to be an immortal once and changed my victim into a vampire as I was. He was a young boy probably sixteen or fifteen years old that stayed with me for a while, but then left my side only to go and get himself killed by a hunter. I was considering giving the offer of the immortal kiss to her but didn’t know how to do it. I sat in a bar drinking brandy debating ways to possibly go do it. Finally it came to me. I would go to her room as I did the many nights before, but only when she sang I would join her in chorus. With that settled I finished my brandy, and left the bar to go to my ally way.
I walked through the rain down the street and took a left down a long stretch of filthy streets that smelt of nothing but garbage. After taking a few more right and left turns I came to the familiar window but only to see its lights off. I could hear neither a sound coming from above nor a single movement; full of curiosity I began my climb up to the window again. When I reached I could see but a single candle lit on the far side of the room and the movement quickly across the room. In quick reaction I climbed higher turning my body - so that if I were to fall my body would be aligned to the wall and my head would be crushed if I were to collide with the paved road just below- just right above the window.
After a few moments of staying completely still, I began to move when the window burst open. Her magnificent curls bouncing forward as she grabbed the railing to embrace herself and to peer over the edge turning her head looking for something in both directions. Realising that what she was looking for was me, as fast as light I moved through the window so I now stood behind her. The drapery on the inside of the window blew dramatically up and around her, causing her to turn around. She squeaked in fright immediately covering her mouth with her hand, but eventually let it fall and replace the frightened look with a pleasant smile. Our eyes locked instantly; though hers didn’t hold an unsettled feeling to them anymore they were warm and welcoming. After a few moments passed she spoke asking, “Who are you?”
“They call me The Immortal Edwin.”
She took a step towards me being hesitant at first then welcoming the next that would soon follow, “I am Aslin.”
I didn’t speak, only studying her with my eyes embracing the sweet sensational smell that rose from her skin, making a burning sensation arise at the back of his throat. His eyes gazed to her throat and he could see the bulging veins that flowed with the liquid he called food. Ignoring the temptation he regained control of himself only to find Aslin standing directly in front of him, catching him off guard.
“What are you Edwin? Are you the one that will set me free from the retched life?”
I looked at the smile that played on her lips as she spoke. “I am called many names Cold One, The Damned, The Cursed, but most of all the Vampire...but what are you?”
“I am Aslin, the singer of all New York who is said to have a curse, that my voice will bring harm to all.”
I laughed. “You, be harmful? I assure you miss that, that is the last thing you need to worry about. I am a reason for you to be scared for yourself of being harmed. For the last many nights I have watched you. Listened to you, and you are the most gorgeous creature my eyes have ever laid on. But why is it that you despise the ways of your life when your voice is directed to the heavens?”
She put her hand up to my face touching it briefly, and then pulled away quickly. “I’ve been waiting for a very long time for someone to come and set me free from this prison. I have dreamt of you.”
“Sing for me.”
“Yes, Master Edwin.”
I watched her as she sang from her heart; the sound ran through me as if it was fire spreading through a forest of many hidden secrets. It burned slightly. Her voice began to grow higher as she let the notes words flow from her mouth. After a few more minutes she stopped and smiled up at me, “Done.”
“Aslin, you wish to escape from this life as a human do you not?”
“Yes.”
“What if I could give a gift? A gift of immortality, would you accept?”
“Yes.”
I gazed into her twilight eyes and pondered for a few moments. Something had to of been wrong; a human wouldn’t just say yes without questioning it first. Even so I let the thought slip my mind because I will finally get to have her not as a companion did I want her, but for a prize. I only had a want for her not a need, but now the question for myself to find an answer was: What would I do with her?
“Master Edwin...” she began to speak again, “I will accept your gift.”
“Alright my Aslin, my beautiful mistress of night, I will give you my immortal kiss.”
I moved her blonde curls from her neck and I kissed her bare skin then lifted my neck ever so lightly and let my fangs grow, then bit into her neck. I moved my left arm so it was behind her back and kept my right around the front of her petite body, slowly dropping as I drained her. Though she didn’t so much as even squeak when I pierced her skin, but it didn’t so much as even concern me. All my focus was on draining her sweet honey-like blood, and then I was done. I removed my fangs from her neck and laid her onto the ground delicately. Her eyes stared at me now but only to study my features; as if she were waiting. I took my left hand and slowly cut with my razor-sharp nail, across my right arm letting my blood flow from me to her. She was able to raise herself and began to drink. I could feel my blood being drawn, but soon enough she finished and stood up.
“The blood pact is complete?”
“Yes, now please sing.”
“Of course my Milord, anything for you,” she smirked.
Her voice had been hesitant, but had a twist of a hidden pleasure of something she was about to do. Her voice began to rise as she sang a new melody one that was ominous and of fires. Then I realized it was too late, the honey like blood ignited in my veins slowly slighting my internal being on fire. I screamed and began to grab my chest, dropping to my knees as she sang. She was the witch, the immortal bounty hunter we had been warned of the night I was at the coven when I first heard her voice. My fingers on my left hand now began to turn to ash.
“Why?” It was the only word I could speak.
Aslin stopped singing and replied, “I told you that I was harmful, but you didn’t heed my warning. I waited for you, because I loved you and knew i could die with you.” She began to sing again, but this time with a hint of pain. I watched as she and I now began to turn to ash slowly. Her eyes were full of love and pain, right then I knew she spoke the truth. I had not listened. The words of my father who gave me his Immortal kiss rang through me. “Beauty can be the death of us.” I gave my final yelp of pain and dispersed into ashes. The last words I hear are, “I’ll see you soon.”
